ANC6A05 Candidate - William Mohring

Hello neighbors, I am William Mohring, and I am a candidate for ANC6A05 because of my deeply rooted belief that government should work for people. Government, however, can only be as good as the people who participate in the process, and it is my full intention to bring a citizen-centered approach to solving our neighborhood problems. I have always been involved in my local community, whether it was organizing fundraisers to benefit charitable organizations and events to inform the community of issues affecting us, or serving as a mentor in an after school program here in Ward 6. The opportunity to represent you and our neighborhood would be an honor and a privilege.

As your commissioner, I would advocate for:

Traffic Calming – C Street NE is a well-documented speedway that presents a series of safety concerns, and other streets, such as 11th Street NE, have become a convenient shortcut through our neighborhood. Our family-oriented neighborhood deserves a strong advocate to ensure our neighborhood is a safe place for bicyclists, pedestrians, and our family and friends that come to visit. I pledge to fight for traffic calming measures to protect all of us.

Public Safety – Safer streets does not end with traffic calming measures, however. Our sidewalks are dilapidated and some of our blocks are dark at night. I pledge to push DDOT to both make repairing our sidewalks and surveying our lighting for improvements a priority here in our historic neighborhood. I will also strengthen the relationship we have with MPD to address crimes such as car robberies, home burglaries, and youth violence. Your safety is a high priority to me.

Economic Development – Our ANC is often called upon to provide community input on the development of the H Street Corridor. While I have many fond memories from time spent on H Street, smart development includes much more than opening bars and restaurants. We have to keep an eye to the future and realize that we need to add more mixed use development to the area. We live in a diverse neighborhood, and other businesses to serve basic shopping needs should be encouraged to make H Street their home as well.

Better Budgets – An important function of the ANC is to provide input on the City’s annual budget. Our neighborhood is primarily residential, but this fact does not change that we depend on the larger community that we a part of to meet certain needs. I pledge to fight to increase the resources available to us through increased funding for historic preservation and home upgrades, recreation spending, funding for our schools, and incentive packages for lure businesses to our area.

A Stronger Community – Our neighborhood is primarily residential, and we should take advantage of this fact. Neighborhood block parties have long been a way for residents to come together to meet each other and discuss the issues of the day, but the process for obtaining the permits could be better streamlined. Additionally, I pledge to hold additional meetings for our neighborhood to compliment the monthly ANC meetings to make sure we are communicating more than once a month. Whether or not our children attend the area schools or if we even have children, we should all play a greater role in strengthening our ties to the schools that serve our neighbors with children. Taken together and with other ideas of your own, we can develop a stronger community.

Questions?

You should always feel comfortable in communicating with me, and I would enjoy hearing how we can incorporate your ideas to make a great neighborhood even better. I can be reached at william.mohring@gmail.com.

ANC6A08 Candidate - Lia Veenendaal-Selck

Hello! My name is Lia Veenendaal-Selck, and I’m a candidate for ANC 6A08. My husband, Fred, and I are homeowners on 17th Place, and deep believers in all that our neighborhood has to offer. We really enjoy this community and are looking forward to raising a family here.

A bit about me…

My background is in education. I am a former public school teacher and I currently work for an educational nonprofit called Teach For America. As the Senior Managing Director of Program for the DC Region, I lead the team that trains and develops our teachers in the DC area. During my time on staff, we have worked with many of the schools in and around our neighborhood (Hines, Eastern, Brown, Maury, and Miner), and I’ve really enjoyed getting to know more about our community through my work with these and other schools.

I am very enthusiastic about the potential prospect of serving our neighborhood as commissioner. Below, I’ve described the main reasons behind why I am running for this position, as well as some qualities I feel I will bring to this work:

•  Drive and passion for community engagement: I am a firm believer in effecting change at the grassroots level. As residents of our neighborhood, we all have a very important perspective to share in influencing the direction of citywide decisions. I am incredibly excited about the power we can have in voicing our concerns and advocating for what we want to see happen in our community.

•  Service mindset: Serving others is one of the things I care most about. It is the main motivation behind my career in education, and it is also my main motivation behind running to serve as our neighborhood’s ANC representative. I have a deep commitment and desire to work hard on behalf of the community in which I live.

•  Desire to listen and learn: People in our neighborhood come from many different backgrounds and experiences. Each one of us wants a great neighborhood and I value the different perspectives that people hold on different issues. Given this, I am deeply committed to actively seek out people’s opinions and to continue to learn and engage in dialogue so that I can best represent the needs and views of all of the residents in our community.

•  Record of results: I currently work at the senior management level in a fast-paced, results-oriented nonprofit. In this environment, I have a great deal of experience working quickly to achieve tangible results, which I hope to use for the betterment of our community.

•  Commitment: I take the ANC position very seriously and as such pledge to attend all ANC meetings as your representative and ensure that our neighborhood has easy access to the information covered.

My priorities:

•  Promote great schools within safe walking distance for students in neighborhood. As a former teacher, the issue of education is close to my heart. I want to make sure that all students in this neighborhood have access to a great education within safe walking distance of their home.

•  Make traffic safer and slower throughout our neighborhood. The volume and speed of commuter traffic on C Street, 17th Street, and 19th Street is dangerous for pedestrians, bikers, and local drivers. It detracts from our neighborhood’s appearance and residential feel. I pledge to support and advocate for policies and initiatives to curb this traffic flow and make the streets of our neighborhood safe and calm for our residents.

•  Ensure cleaner streets, neighborhood beautification, and safer sidewalks for our neighborhood. Too often, trash is found in and around our streets and lots, and dead trees can be found on citywide streets throughout our neighborhood. Some of the empty lots that exist are unkempt and become additional traps for trash. Additionally, many of the sidewalks in our neighborhood are broken up by tree roots and some sidewalks are little more than dirt paths (check out the path on the southern side of the C Street and 1900 block) that can be very dangerous and difficult to navigate for elderly pedestrians. There are some very simple things we can advocate for as neighborhood residents to change this reality, and I would love to work on this together.

•  Promote consistent access to neighborhood parking for residents. Many residents that I’ve spoken with have mentioned concerns about having access to parking in their neighborhood during high school football games, on school days, or because of zoned parking regulations. I am committed to working towards ensuring all of us have consistent access to parking near our homes.

•  Advocate for increased access to recreation and community education, especially for children and teens in our community. There are some fantastic programs in place already at the Rosedale Community Center and I’d love to see even more opportunities for children and teens in our area. I would also love to see more small community playgrounds for children within our single member district.

•  Raise and address OUR neighborhood’s concerns: One of my primary concerns as commissioner would be to make sure that all of our neighborhood residents have a voice in how our community develops. As such, I am committed to learning more about the issues that you find most urgent to address and working with you to find and propose solutions. Please contact me with your thoughts, ideas, and opinions. I’m very eager to hear from you!

How to reach me:

I would love to meet with you at any point to hear about your opinion and perspective on issues affecting our community. If these times don’t work for you but you’d still like to meet, I’m happy to! My contact information is below. Just email me and we’ll set something up.

ANC6A07 Candidate - Necothia "Nikki" Bowens

What is my Commitment to Rosedale?

TO WORK, SERVE, LISTEN AND ENGAGE, because…

•I am a product of my community and for many years Rosedale has been yearning for a harvest. “I am that harvest”.

I am proud to be the 4th generation to be raised in the Rosedale Community. For many years my Great-Grandparents and Elders of this Community have taught me the value of home and community which has given me strong beliefs in “good neighbors and community relations”, without these two key components, a community will never rise. I took those lessons and have applied those values to my life, and I believe those lessons will endure the great weight for this season.

•I am more than ready and willing to serve while working with Community and City Officials to further the growth and development of Rosedale and the District of Columbia.

Willing Worker and Servants Heart: I have prided myself in being willing to help others beyond my family and immediate friends. I served as Deaconess in my previous Church home and currently work in the capacity of Missionary in my new Church home. I believe in supporting and uplifting anyone in their hour of need, and I especially believe in community service and the idea of every hand being busy during the harvest.

Currently I serve as President of Rosedale’s Citizen’s Alliance, for which I have been honored to serve for two (2) terms. One of the many great benefits of volunteering is being able to work with the youth of Rosedale, as I am the Flag/Color Guard Team coach for the Rosedale Tigers Football team through the Rosedale Youth Institute. I also am a member of the ANC6A Community Outreach Committee.

My capacity to lead is not limited to community, although it is my passion, I also lend a hand with nationwide Non-Profit organizations by coordinating and planning various events. I participate annually in fund raising for Breast Cancer Awareness, Sickle Cell Foundation, Leukemia and Lymphoma society as well as the National and Local Roller Skating Organizations.

One of my many passions is roller-skating, and over the years I have experienced great joy while working with varies organizations that teach and promote family fitness, health, and fun through the art and sport of roller-skating for all ages.

As a Small business owner, I strongly believe in Entrepreneurship and community empowerment.

•I am concerned about the Social and Economic Environment, Communication, Programming, Community Relations, Public Safety and Education in Rosedale as well as our Neighboring Communities.

There are many issues which plaque our community and with lack of aid, we will continue to see our hope for change crippled.

It is my belief when there are social activities for the community, for both young and old, it creates an atmosphere that will lead to hope and inevitable change. The economics of our community needs to be addressed so that all who reside in Rosedale and neighboring communities will benefit. Also, with the aid of the city, we can build better community relations, which can lead to greater public safety. When there is less idle time, there are more productive minds!

Rosedale is being offered the best in resources.

Here is what I offer you as Commissioner:  History, Innovation, Community Relations, Creativity, Socialism, and Networking resources. I bring with me to this position, 25 years of Management experience and 30 years of volunteerism.

10 years of Marketing and Promotions. I can offer all of these things because I am passionate about our community, "Rosedale" and its future. "I CARE".

I will ensure everyone in the community will be engaged to further the growth of Rosedale and our city, both socially and economically.

“I believe if you feel better about where you live, you will live better.”

ANC6A05 Candidate - Sharee Lawler

I'm Sharee Lawler, a candidate for ANC 6A05. Since I moved to this neighborhood nine years ago, I've become a strongly rooted member of the community. I thoroughly enjoy volunteering as a citizen member of ANC 6A's Economic Development & Zoning Committee, which I got involved with when I became interested in streetcars and started attending their meetings.

As a writer and editor for The Hill is Home since it began almost a year and a half ago, I keep my eyes and ears open to hot topics in our local area. I care that many people are able to have their points of view heard and that readers of the blog have a daily resource for news and information about our community.

My company, Black Lab Advisory, a marketing and strategy consultancy for small businesses, keeps me well connected with other Capitol Hill businesses. I serve on the board of CHAMPS, Capitol Hill's Chamber of Commerce and started their Business Development Forum which I lead each month.

Meet Me
I'm eager to hear from my neighbors in the SMD. Please stop by one or both of these events to say hello and tell me about your ideas for our neighborhood:

- Coffee with the candidate: Saturday, October 2nd, 3-5PM at SOVA (1359 H St, NE) organized by Lawler for ANC6A05

- Meet the 6A candidates: Tuesday, October 5th, 7:30PM at Lane Memorial CME (14th & C, NE) organized by the North Lincoln Park Neighborhood Association

Priorities
Moving to Capitol Hill nearly a decade ago has had a profound impact on my pathway in life. It has influenced my thinking about the importance of community involvement and inspired me to run for ANC. Community involvement has become such a passion that it even inspired me to become an entrepreneur so I could be more active in my neighborhood.

As commissioner, my priorities would be:

- Commuter traffic: The volume of traffic streaming through our neighborhood makes this a significant day-to-day concern. For the last year I've been writing about the C Street, NE Project for The Hill is Home, and staying abreast of resident-led traffic calming initiatives. I'll be a strong advocate for measures recognizing the residential nature of our streets. Safe passage for pedestrians should take precedence over quick communing routes for Marylanders.

- Public safety: From acute incidents, like carjackings, to consistent problems, such as upticks in crime each summer, our neighborhood faces some complex safety issues. While I agree with those who say that incidences of crime are dramatically lower compared to a decade ago, my view is that we must continue to focus on what we want our neighborhood to be, rather than just being glad its better than it was. The safety and security of you, your family, your home and your belongings are of the highest importance to me.

- Economic development: Though SMD 05 is primarily residential, the commissioners of 6A are called upon to make decisions that impact the evolution of the H Street Corridor. It is my view that well-considered economic development policy takes into consideration the needs and desires of the residential community it serves while encouraging businesses to have the freedom to invest and grow.

- Historic preservation: One of the features that makes our community unique and desirable is its historic nature. I believe that promoting the preservation of our historic architecture is beneficial to the quality of life in our neighborhood.

As a resident for almost a decade and a local business owner, I bring experience and local knowledge that will be valuable as a commissioner. I'm also considered a strategic thinker and consensus-builder, two skills I think are important in governing.

Endorsements
I'm pleased and excited that my candidacy has been endorsed by these other respected and seasoned community leaders:

Mary Beatty, current 6A05 commissioner
Drew Ronneberg, 6A02 commissioner
Joe Fengler, former 6A02 commissioner
Cody Rice, former 6A03 commissioner

For more information, please come to my coffee meet & greet on October 2nd, the NLPNA meeting on October 5th, or email me with your ideas and suggestions at sharee.lawler@gmail.com.
