Briefing from Rosedale Rec. Ctr. Kick-off Meeting
Below is a briefing from last week’s Rosedale Recreation Center (RRC) Kick-off meeting with representatives from the Mayors Office, DCPR and Parks Planning Commission.
It appears the meeting was scheduled to announce that a new Rosedale Recreation Center will be constructed in 2009, with ground-breaking scheduled for May 2009! This moves the reconstruction schedule forward by 2 years! Previously, the RRC was scheduled for the 2011 construction season.
Per Council Member Tommy Wells, the proposed budget is currently $14 million for an approximately 16,000 sq.ft. facility. It appears, from the meetings discussions, the new RRC will be modeled after the recently constructed Riggs LaSalle Community Center in Ward 4 (501 Riggs Road, NE). Note Riggs LaSalle is called a COMMUNITY CENTER and not a recreation center.

Below are a few listed features of Riggs LaSalle Community Center:
Designed and constructed as a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building
Full-size Indoor Gymnasium
Game Room
Computer Lab
Fitness Center / Weight Room
Multipurpose Room
Arts and Crafts Room
Restrooms with showers and lockers
Kitchenette
Dedicated parking for car pools and bicycles
Outdoor Spray Park
Outdoor Patio Seating
As for the inclusion of a new library with proposed RCC facility: Currently, the $14 million is budgeted only for a new RRC facility. A proposed library would have a separate budget line-item and will not be factored into the planning budget for the new facility.
Mr. Ellis (marcus.ellis@dc.gov) will coordinate all RRC programming issues/plans/concerns and will schedule community meetings in the near future.
Meeting attendees included:

Rosedale Recreation Center Redevelopment Kick-off Meeting!
The Rosedale Recreation Center Redevelopment Kick-off Meeting has been scheduled!
When: Thursday, November 6, 2008 @ 6:30PM
Where: Rosedale Recreation Center, 17th & Gales Streets, NE (202.724.5405)

Below is an email, in its entirety, from Jesse Rounds with DC Department of Parks & Recreation (DPR).
All,
It has been a LONG time since I used this email to contact you regarding the redevelopment of Rosedale Recreation Center. I’m really excited to announce that we’re going to have a kickoff meeting for the redevelopment next Thursday November 6th at 6:30pm. The meeting will be at Rosedale.
What we plan to discuss is the schedule for the redesign and our budget situation. Our partners within the DC Government will be handling the actual design and construction so in late November/early December we’ll have that first design meeting.
Please spread the word about this first meeting. The more the merrier.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
Thanks,
Jesse

DPR Accepting Public Comment on a Dog Park at Kingsman Field

A group of neighbors on Capitol Hill have been trying to get a legal dog park established at Kingsman Field (13th and D NE) for several years. The group, Hill Hounds, submitted a formal application to the DC Department of Parks and Recreation a month ago and DPR acknowledged the application and opened it for public comments. Public comments carry very heavy weight in their decision-making process. The public comments are tallied separately from the petition signatures and supporting letters, so even if you'd already signed or written DPR, please take a moment to email as well.
The public comment period ends this Monday, 6/30. Submitting a comment is quick and easy:
* Email DPR.dogparks@dc.gov
* Include your name, full street address, and phone number (to prove you’re a local resident—your comment won’t be accepted if you don’t include this info)
* Tell them you support a dog park at Kingsman Field.
* Every member of your household over the age of 18 can submit their own individual comment (the more the better).
* Deadline: COB Monday, 6/30
Include a sentence or two about why you support the dog park. If you don’t have a dog, specify that and that you still support a dog park on the Field.
Hill Hounds hopes this will be a tangible first step to a complete refurbishment of the space, adding a community garden, resurfacing the basketball court, repairing the fences and removing graffiti, planting new trees, resodding the field—making it a real community showplace we can all enjoy whether we have dogs or not. The proposed dog park would be located between the current basketball court and the rear of the church at 14th and Tennessee—not touching the current athletic fields used by Sports on the Hill and taking no space from children’s soccer fields. Right now it’s just unused asphalt where litter collects.

Kathy Patterson Visits the Rosedale Rec Center

On the evening of Monday, May 15th, Councilmember Kathy Patterson met with about 45 parents and other concerned Rosedale residents to discuss the need for a new neighborhood Rec Center. Councilmember Patterson chairs the Committee for Education, Libraries, and Recreation, which oversees the budget for DC's rec centers.
The visit was organized by the Rosedale Youth Institute, an organization of Rec Center parents and volunteers, and the RCA. Clinton Sharp, president of the Institute, introduced the Councilmember at the meeting and outlined resident concerns. Also present were local ANC commissioners Gladys Mack and Mfon Ibangha; Frank Crawford, the Director of the Rec Center; Kevin Keegan, the new Police Inspector covering PSA 103; Nancy Rosen from the Hill Rag; and Will Cobb, DC Council candidate for Ward 6.

After the Councilmember answered questions from the audience, Mr. Sharp and Sonja Stanley, Vice President of the Institute, then took Ms. Patterson and other interested persons on a tour of the Rec Center. In this photo, Councilmember Patterson listens while Mr. Sharp shows her the Rec's computer center. Behind her, a staffmember keeps a running list of concerns.
