30-day, Year-Over-Year PSA 103 Crime Comparison

HERE are the Patrol Service Area (PSA) 103 30-day crime comparison chart - compares December 2009 to December 2010

One very interesting note from Lisa White, ANC Commissioner 7D01, Kingman Park had over 20 burglaries in a two year span and fortunately the perpetrator was finally apprehended in November 2010.

Another sporadic homicide shooting, this one on Monday night 8/29/11@19th St., just off Benning. From my home here in the neighborhood, I heard a series of 12 rounds from what sounded like a semi-auto..."pop-pop-pop, pop-pop-pop, pop-pop-pop, pop-pop-pop." I'm surprised no one has posted anything about this:

Anon,
Do you live north or south of Benning? The link you posted was for a murder that happened outside of the Ward 6 and Rosedale-Kingman Park boundaries so it didn't come up in my usual community news feeds. I'm actually not sure if PSA 103 covers that district.

Very sad and thanks for the update. Even though crime statistics are broken up by community and sometimes arbitrary lines, reckless and dangerous behavior has no boundaries.

I stay south of Benning, and in the Kingman Park/Rosedale neighborhood (depending on how on defines the boundaries), which isn't all inside Ward 6, as you may well know. Yes, this happened a half block north of Benning, and possibly outside of where one might define certain neighborhood boundaries. I'm not sure if there's a connection here, but the night after the shooting/homicide, I saw a small candlelit memorial set up at 18th and D St. NE. I'm gonna go out on a limb here, but perhaps one of the guys involved in the shooting stayed there? What was the motive? Is there an ongoing beef here in the area between some crews?

What about that "Food7Store" at 19th&Benning, or other "markets" there...what role, if any, did they play in feeding the kind of activity/business that may have led to this shooting? Is there too heavy a concentration of "off" sale liqour licenses there? It seems like I see a po-lice car and/or ambulance at that intersection almost every time I walk past it. Should that be a basis for opposing a new "on" sale liquor license, i.e. a cafe or bar? I think this murder could be the basis for continuing a conversation around these issues that affect much more than just a few blocks north of Benning that's "outside" of somebody's definition of the Rosedale neighborhood boundaries.

FYI "just off Benning" means this murder occurred@"the 1900 block of Bennett Place," which is the first street north of Benning before H Street.

Anon,
I have no clue if the vigil you saw was connected to Tyrone Fogle's murder. Did it look like this?

That is all the information I could find at the time.

When it comes to sharing of information related to crimes or community blogs are a good place to start. And then probably ANC cooperation and community group cooperation. Leveraging voluntary agreements with places that sale alcohol seems to be a tool that ANCs and community organizations use a lot to control certain "concerning" behavior like loitering and litter. Possibly going to the next PSA meeting and finding out what is the best way to share information and support local communities since crime does travel across ward, ANC, community boundaries. That's all I can say on the matter.
