S.C.O.R.E. Friday a big success.

SCORE Friday’s

Students Capable of Reading Excellent, a program established by RCA Member & Vice President Ms. Hannah Lewis scored excellent review for community partnership with Rosedale Youth. 

The purpose of SCORE Friday’s is to increase reading comprehension and fluency; vocabulary building, improve writing skills and to encourage reading for pleasure. 

With the assistance of a Community Grant certificate from community partner, Greater DC Cares, SCORE Friday’s was able to complete a very success program.  Housed at the Gibbs Elementary School, shuttered site for the Rosedale Recreation Center, community youth met every other Friday with anticipation and ready hearts.   During the program children were able to reach the aforementioned goals by reading, writing, playing games and friendly competitions.  The Grant enabled Ms. Lewis, program coordinator to purchase paper supplies, books, writing material and food for participants. 

There were approximately 15 children who receive Certificates of Recognition, which made for a great end to the 2011 school year.  There was a close out Pizza Party and the kids promised to continue SCORING and striving for excellence. 

Great Job Hannah, SCORE Friday’s is indeed a successful addition to the Community.

RCA Community Scholarship Fundraiser was a Great Success!

Rosedale and Kingman Park Neighbors and Community Members Turned Out to Support

 the RCA Community Scholarship Fund @ Langston Bar & Grille

On March 28th, 2011, the Rosedale Citizens' Alliance (RCA) in association with Greater DC Cares held its first fundraiser for the RCA Community Scholarship Program.  It was a wonderful and successful evening.  Good food, wonderful atmosphere, community members and Friends of Rosedale all came together with an overwhelming response.

Due to the support of community business owners and Friends of Rosedale, we were able to raise over $500 towards our goal of $2,500 to award $300-$500 scholarships to people pursuing higher education opportunities in the Rosedale and Kingman Park neighborhoods.

RCA and Greater DC Cares are very grateful to Langston Bar & Grille and it's staff, B&B Barber Shop, The Argonaut, Master Liquors, Rosedale Youth Institute and Councilmember Tommy Wells and his staff and all other attendees for their support and contributions.  We could not have done it with out everyone's commitment and spirit.

We also want to congratulate the raffle winners: Scott Frick, Kathryn & Kyle Russell and Tim Schwab; we hope you enjoy your prizes.  Please stay posted for additional information on upcoming events in our continued efforts to meet the goal for this RCA Community Scholarship Fund.

Scholarship Fundraiser at Langston Bar & Grille on 3/28/11

Rosedale Citizens’ Alliance (RCA) and Greater DC Cares are excited to host our first community scholarship fundraiser on March 28th from 6:30pm-930pm at Langston Bar and Grille. We invite everyone to join us for great food and drinks and help raise money for a wonderful neighborhood initiative.  You will receive one raffle ticket for every $10 you donate for a chance to win great prizes.




Our goal is to raise $2,500 to award $300 - $500 scholarships to students from the Rosedale and Kingman Park neighborhood for the 2011-12 academic years.  Don’t miss this great opportunity to empower your neighborhood and learn more about RCA and Greater DC Cares.

Save the Date - Rosedale's Development History Presentation

Pleae join the Capitol Hill Restoration Society (CHRS) and the Rosedale Citizens’ Alliance (RCA) as we learn about the "Development History of the Rosedale Neighborhood."

When - Tuesday, March 8, 2011 from 6:15pm – 8:00pm

• 6:15pm-6:45pm - Social hour with light refreshments
• 6:45pm - 7pm - Greeting from RCA and a brief CHRS Business Meeting
• 7pm - 8pm - Featured presentation

Location - The temporary Rosedale Recreation Center at the shuttered Gibbs ES, 500 19th Street NE

The CHRS and the RCA are sponsoring a presentation on historic buildings by EHT Traceries, a well-known architectural history firm.

This presentation will describe the development history of the area approximately bounded by H Street/Benning Road (north); East Capitol Street (south); 15th Street (west); and 19th Street (east). Rosedale, which lies within these boundaries, is a distinctive neighborhood that developed over the late 19th and early 20th centuries, just a stone’s throw from the H Street commercial corridor Find out who developed the neighborhood and learn about the different types of architecture and buildings from knowledgeable architectural historians.

This event is free, open to the public and brought to you in part by the CHRS “Beyond the Boundaries” program, which seeks to promote the appreciation of neighborhood history and support historic preservation efforts outside the boundaries of the Capitol Hill Historic District.

4-H Leadership & Volunteer Training on June 6

What: 4-H Leadership & Volunteer Training
When: Saturday, June 6th from 10AM -1PM
Where: Rosedale Recreation Center, 1700 Gales Street, NE (corner of 17th Street)

The University of the District of Columbia Committee Outreach & Extension Services' Cooperative Extension Services and 4-H are conducting leadership and volunteer training in order for volunteers to lead 4-H structured programs at the Rosedale Recreation Center.

We are asking for full community participation - all entrepreneurs, knitters/crotchet specialist, scientists/engineers, seamstress, gardeners, artist, communication specialist, fashionistas, actors, actress and the list goes on and on. Come one, come all. There’s something for everyone.

RCA Social @ Cafe Roma a Great Success!

Last Saturday morning's RCA social was a great success!

Both Ward 6 Councilmember Tommy Wells and Ward 7 Councilmember Yvette Alexander were in attendance. It was nice to just sit and socialize with both council members and discuss community topics casually (either one-on-one or in small groups) over a cup of coffee and a pastry. Both Wells and Alexander stayed well over an hour, allowing everyone a chance to meet each other.

RCA plans on hosting another similar social next spring, stay tuned!

Everyone is invited to attend! This is a meet & greet social with no agenda or structure. It is an opportunity to socialize and discuss commuity issues with CM Wells and your neighbors alike while enjoying freshly baked goods from Rosedale's neighborhood cafe.

RCA's Rosedale Community Center & Library (RCC&L) Committee, in partnership with the Rosedale Youth Institute (RYI), Our Family Skate Association and Style Skaters Network, will host it's 2nd Mini Rosedale Skate Jam.

When: Friday September 19th
Where: Rosedale Community Center, 1700 Gales Street, NE (Tennis Courts)
Time: 6:30pm until 8:30pm

There will be skating, dancing and fun for all. So bring your skates, blades or just come to have some fun and encourage the kids.

Let's see your "style of skating". (Skates will be provided: All, but limited number of sizes).

Community Garden Party was a Great Success!

Yesterday evening, Sunday July 27, 2008, the King Park / Rosedale Community Garden (KP/RCG) and Rosedale Citizens’ Alliance (RCA) cosponsored a garden party at King Park / Rosedale Community Garden; it was a fantastic success! We had great weather (escaping two thunderstorms), delicious foods and inviting conversations with neighbors and gardeners. Thanks to the hard and persistent work of garden & RCA members, the newly tamed “southern lawn” was a fitting venue for grilling, socializing (adults, children and dogs) and playing a friendly game of horse-shoes.

Cafe Roma (411 18th Street, NE) donated panini-sandwiches & biscotti-cookies and MPD officers were in attendance, as well as, Ward 7 Councilmember Yvette Alexander and ANC6A07 Commissioner Gladys Mack.

KP/RCG & RCA would like to thank everyone who made the event a great success, especially those who worked so hard to prepare the community garden and surrounding grounds, organize and purchase supplies and food, create and distribute the fliers and displays, prepared and cooked food and help set-up and tear-down the event. Also, a big thanks to the current property owner for allowing KP/RCG & RCA to use the land for the community garden and the garden party.
