16th & Benning Intersection To Close Sep 29-Oct 24 For Construction
The District Department of Transportation will re-open the intersection of 17th Street NE and Benning Road on Tuesday, September 29 – two days ahead of schedule – and at the same time, close the 16th Street and Benning Road intersection until October 24 to accommodate road construction within the intersection.
The 16th Street closing will take effect at 9:30 am. The 17th Street intersection will be re-opened by that time or earlier on that date.
From September 29 to October 24, northbound 16th Street motorists will be unable to cross Benning Road into the main entrance of the Hechinger Mall parking lot and also will be unable to turn left onto Benning. For access to the Mall lot, 16th Street motorists will be advised to take Bladensburg Road to Maryland Avenue. There is a Mall lot entrance at Maryland Avenue and Neal Street NE. Detour signs will be posted.
Also during this period, westbound Benning Road motorists will be unable to turn left onto 16th Street. Eastbound Benning Road motorists may continue to turn right onto 16th, and northbound 16th Street motorists may continue to turn right onto Benning.
The re-opening of the 17th Street intersection provides a left-turn alternative to 16th Street. The 17th Street intersection was closed on September 14, and scheduled for re-opening on October 1 but is being re-opened two days earlier because the construction contractors completed the intersection work faster than anticipated.
Thank you for your patience.
